To determine whether there is a causal effect of oral contraceptives on sexuality. We hypothesized that a widely used pill impairs sexuality. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Enrollment began in February and was completed in August A total of healthy women, aged 18—35 years, were randomized to treatment, and completed the study. Overall sexual function was similar in women in the oral contraceptive and placebo groups. The mean frequency of satisfying sexual episodes and personal distress were also similar between groups.
The effect of combined oral contraceptives COCs on female sexuality has long been a matter of discussion 1. At present, despite the bulk of literature, only two randomised placebo-controlled trials have investigated the causal influence of COCs on sexual function 3 , 4. Both of these studies evaluated a pill introduced in the s, containing ethinyl oestradiol EE and levonorgestrel, and the findings pointed to a COC-induced reduction in sexual desire 4 , 5.
